Readers sound off on buying into lies, suggested housing sites and World Series tickets
Philadelphia: Anyone think the suffering of Hurricanes Helene and Milton was an odd time to try and score political points? Not so for former President Donald Trump and the MAGA cult. Their tapestry of lies about FEMA’s response to the storms was disgusting and a sign of desperation.
A house of cards can’t shelter you from reality
Philadelphia: Anyone think the suffering of Hurricanes Helene and Milton was an odd time to try and score political points? Not so for former President Donald Trump and the MAGA cult. Their tapestry of lies about FEMA’s response to the storms was disgusting and a sign of desperation.
The former president has no respect for the voters either, or for those who attend his pep rallies. If he did, he would not serve them a daily diet of lies. As a tax-dodger, he has no respect for the budget challenges of Americans; as a draft-dodger, no respect for the courage and sacrifices of our military. His lack of respect for the rule of law, our form of democracy and the Bill of Rights demeans us all, especially women! He fills Truth Social with hate for the concept of love thy neighbor, an important principle of all faiths.
Supporters believe he has business successes. He has none. He expects his campaign rally expenses to be picked up by “sucker” taxpayers. His proposed tariffs are certain disaster for the economy and for the consumer. One campaign truth is his promise to bail out billionaires. Those wishing to ride the Trump tiger of deceit, fear, hate, revenge and quick fixes must be prepared to be devoured by it.
Every American should question government policy, but expect no change from a convicted felon and pathological liar peddling fear without facts! He has no respect for voters, so they should return the favor on Election Day. Michael J. Cummings
Racism on display
Bronx: When Trump began his Make America Great Again campaign, I answered a Voicer to say that it was a call to make America white again. Perhaps now after the Madison Square Garden rally, that Voicer finally got his true answer. As for the Republican Party, all I can say is shame on you all! You have chosen a candidate who will destroy America and all we stand for. We are now so split that even Gorilla Glue can’t help us. Jose R. Roldan
American dictator
Staten Island: Donald Trump is the new Hitler. Discrimination, racism and sexism are his policies. Is this what we want for a president? Granted, we need change, but he is not the one to make them. He wants to be lord and master, and that is not what the U.S.A. is about. We are about choice, but with him we won’t have it. Please think about it before you pull the lever. Natalie Johnson
Insensitive invocation
Westbury, L.I.: Democrats are constantly using the name Hitler for political purposes. They use that name so flippantly without thinking about the pain it causes. It’s not just a word — it stands for the torture and death of people, genocide and deep pain. People using the name Hitler should not be president of the United States. Joyce Miller
Do not follow
Brooklyn: Win or lose in this election, I am afraid that we are going to be stuck with Trumpism. The GOP is going to try and emulate Trump’s ways — lying, deriding immigrants, racial remarks, etc. JD Vance and Ron DeSantis have already exposed themselves as his puppets. The one and only thing I agree with Trump about were his statements on veterans being suckers and losers: Vance, a veteran, belongs in that category, as he turned from calling his buddy “America’s Hitler” to his highness. Keep this in mind as you decide who to vote for. The orange man said he would invoke a presidential pardon for all those who raided the Capitol on Jan. 6, making the death of the policemen in vain. As for the wives of men who say they’d rather vote for Trump than a woman, here is the opportunity to show that you have a mind of your own. Anthony Bruno
What’s so funny?
Whiting, N.J.: What is Kamala Harris laughing about all the time? Every time I see her on TV or in the newspaper, she has her mouth wide open laughing about something, who knows what? If she loses the election, will she still be laughing? She only shows us that she is a laughing complete idiot! John Robert Brandenburg
Blunders abroad
Manhattan: I agree with Voicer James Hyland that there should have been a presidential debate focusing on foreign policy, but his analysis of both the Ukrainian and Iranian issues is at best incomplete. Vladimir Putin would have preferred an America still bogged down in Afghanistan, wasting billions per year on a corrupt and unpopular regime that could not stand for two weeks after 20 years of American support. His interest in Ukraine arose more than two decades ago and was driven far more by Russian domestic concerns than anything Trump or President Biden might have done. As for Iran, there is no debate over the intent and means of its theocratic regime, but a chief restraint on its worst means was the nuclear agreement Barack Obama put in place. Trump thoughtlessly canceled that, resulting in a far graver threat to Israel today. He plays checkers while Putin and Iran play chess. Michael Barnhart
Stronger than that
Auburndale: To Voicer Dom Mastropolo: A President Harris will not state that she wants to try being president for life, as Trump said about Xi Jinping. She will not ask aides to leave the room in order to speak privately with Putin and obsequiously cave in front of him, saying she doesn’t see why he would try to influence our elections. And she definitely will not exchange love letters with Kim Jong Un! Kamala is a tough person who doesn’t admire and want to emulate dictators. Cathi Venis
Stuck the landing
Staten Island: I don’t know what the big deal was about SpaceX’s rocket re-landing in its silo. Captain Video did it in the 1950s without a silo. Thomas B. Tobiassen
Plant power
Brooklyn: To Voicer Joe Fontanelli: When plants cause problems, it is because they were irrigated with or contaminated with runoff water from animals, such as chickens or dairy cows. Plants are a good source of protein per calorie. A serving of 100 calories of broccoli has 12 grams of protein, while 100 grams of steak have only six. John D. Blank
Wasted space
Brooklyn: Why waste newsprint when no one can read, much less fill in, the Saturday crossword at the end of the paper? Charlie O’Neill
Unrealistic alternatives
Manhattan: Since he started his otherwise progressive political career, Councilman Christopher Marte has had significant support from the well-connected and politically powerful NIMBY supporters of the Elizabeth Street Garden, so it is no surprise that he opposes housing at that site (“Save this garden & build more housing,” op-ed, Oct. 28). His arguments are unoriginal and wrong. Although construction on Haven Green housing on Elizabeth St. can start within days, he proposes 388 Hudson St., which would take many years if it was ever built. The city has always proposed that as additional, not replacement, housing along with Haven Green, the proposed Elizabeth St. housing. The parking garage at 2 Howard St. has also been talked about for 10 years with zero progress. Any other alternatives would be starting from zero and take years, if not decades, to build. Alec Pruchnicki
Ticket usher
Staten Island: My Aunt Fay lived in New York City. She was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan. “Gussie, you’re off next week. Here’s plenty of money if you’ll go to Ebbets Field near you, stand in line and buy a World Series ticket for me.” As requested, mom drove there, parked, walked and soon found herself surrounded by people. Overwhelmed, she spotted an older woman going toward the stadium. She explained her situation and confusion to the woman, who said, “Come with me. I’m on my way to work. I’ll show you where to stand. You’ll be first in line when I open my ticket booth!” Lynne Stone
Idle talk
Bronx: I totally agree with Voicer Frank Rice. These in-dugout interviews are boring and useless. I believe the players are not interested in giving them. Please stop. Get into the game. Ralph Canzone Sr.
