Racist texts sent to SF students, district responds

(KRON) – Students at San Francisco Unified School District have received racist text messages that have been sent to Black women, men and students nationwide, according to the San Francisco Unified School District.

The messages, sent anonymously, were reported in several states, including New York, Alabama, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and California. The contents of the text include the texter telling the person to show up at an address at a particular time “with your belongings.” The messages have generally used a similar tone but varied in wording.

The San Francisco Unified School District has responded to the racist attacks and said it will “provide the support,” which includes cooperating with law enforcement investigation regarding the texts and sharing resources.

“On behalf of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), the Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF), the NAACP, and the faith community, we are writing to condemn the racist text messages from unknown sources that are being sent to members of the African American community nationwide. This includes SFUSD students and young people in San Francisco. San Francisco is a beacon for diversity and inclusion, and we will not tolerate hate in our city. Our hearts go out to anyone who is on the receiving end of these messages.”

The school district continues, “Racism of any kind has no place in our community. We do not tolerate any instance of hate, bigotry or racism in San Francisco schools and we actively work to support SFUSD staff with implementing anti-racist approaches both in and out of the classroom.”

The FBI is currently leading the investigation regarding the texts.

The SFUSD implores anyone who has received these racist text messages to contact their local law enforcement or local FBI field office at (800) 225-5324 or visit FBI.gov/tips.
