SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Breed out, Lurie in.
Incumbent Mayor London Breed conceded the San Francisco mayoral race on Thursday, making way for philanthropist Daniel Lurie to take over as the next head of the city.
Lurie, 47, has never held an elected office. Still, more than 69,005 San Franciscans cast their vote for him to lead the city going forward. Lurie received 27.85% of first-place votes as of Thursday night and defeated Breed on the city's ranked-choice voting system.
So, who is Lurie?
He is a San Francisco native and father of two. He is the founder of the anti-poverty nonprofit Tipping Point. He is also the heir to Levi Strauss' fortune.
Lurie had a privileged upbringing growing up in San Francisco. He says he was told from the time he was young that he should use what he has to help others.
"There was never a point where my parents didn’t say to me, 'You have an obligation to your community. You have an obligation to lift others up,'" he said to KRON4 in February.
Now, he has the chance to do just that. Lurie was previously critical of San Francisco leaders, calling the local government a "broken system" when he sat down with KRON4 in February.
He said that his plans for when he takes office include staffing the police and sheriff's departments and tackling the fentanyl crisis.
"We’re going to be cleaning our streets," he said. "You’re coming off the overpasses, you come down Sixth Street, it’s going to be pristine. The first image of San Francisco when our visitors and our travelers come here, has got to be a city that is clean and safe and vibrant."
Dealing with the drug problem on city streets entails providing more shelter beds and compelling addicts to get treatment, he said.
And Lurie does not have his eye fixed upwards. He said he does not want to get to Sacramento or Washington D.C. and will be done with politics after serving as Mayor of San Francisco.
"I don’t want to do another political job after this. I’m doing this. I’m running for mayor for eight years and then I’m out," he said.
