One of the Navy’s San Diego-based littoral combat ships returned to its homeport last week after a successful deployment lasting more than a year.
The USS Mobile has been at sea for 19 months and participated in operations in the South China Sea along with the French Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. The Mobile was also present at an International Exhibition in Singapore.
Commanding Officer David Gardner said he was incredibly proud of his crew’s resilience.
“They saved both time and money with their can-do attitude, and that was key to our success,” Gardner said.
The Mobile is a trimaran variant of the littoral combat ship class, all 19 of which are based in San Diego.
The littoral warships are 418 feet long and armed with a main gun, anti-aircraft missiles and machine guns, as well as two helicopters. They are designed to operate in near-shore environments and can sprint at speeds over 50 mph.
