If you want to vote by mail in the 2024 presidential election and still need to register, the deadline is tonight at 11:59 pm. Otherwise, you can still register and vote in-person before 8 p.m. on Nov. 5.

California residents 18 or older can register to vote online on the California Secretary of State’s website. Teens 16 or older can also pre-register to vote online. Their registration automatically goes into effect when they turn 18. You can also check to see if your voter registration is active and accurate on the state’s website and sign up for alerts to track your ballot.

Newly-registered voters will receive their ballot in the mail within several days. Mailed ballots can be returned by mail or dropped into a drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5 — the final deadline to register and vote.

Those who miss the Monday night deadline still can conditionally register to vote and cast a ballot in person until polls close on Election Day. To conditionally register, visit your county registrar’s office or a polling location. The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters keeps a list of polling locations online.

The end of online voter registration is a key deadline as the Bay Area barrels toward Election Day.

Helen Nolan, assistant registrar in Contra Costa County, expects that several thousand people will have registered between the weekend and Tuesday morning. Nolan and other registrars are asking voters to cast their ballots as soon as possible.

In Santa Clara County, about 1,000 voters have registered since Oct. 16, said Steve Goltiao, a spokesperson for the registrar’s office.
