(KRON) -- Last month, voters approved a recall of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao. The Alameda County Registrar of Voters will certify the election this week. On Wednesday, city officials laid out the plan for replacing her.
At a press conference at Oakland City Hall, Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas said city leadership was "focused on serving residents and businesses along with a transparent, responsible, and orderly transition."
Fortunato Bas successfully ran for Alameda County District 5 Supervisor, which will leave her former Oakland City Council District 2 seat vacant. On Wednesday, she said it would be in Oakland's "best interest" to consolidate special elections for Oakland mayor and Oakland City Council District 2.
The Oakland City Council is set to approve the election results on Dec. 17. That same date, Fortunato Bas said she will resign from the city council, at which point she will step in as interim mayor. Following Fortunato Bas' resignation, Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb will serve as acting city council president.
The special election for Oakland mayor and Oakland City Council District 2 will be held on Tuesday, April 15, according to Fortunato Bas.
