Stevie Nicks: 1979 abortion prevented Fleetwood Mac from being ‘destroyed’

Fleetwood Mac as we know it could have been done if Stevie Nicks hadn’t had an abortion in the late 1970s.

The 76-year-old rock star revealed how her decision to terminate her pregnancy impacted the legendary rock group during its chart-topping heights.

“I got pregnant and it was like, ‘Why? I have an IUD, I am totally protected, I have a great gynecologist. How come this has happened? What the heck?’” Nicks shared during a “CBS Sunday Morning” interview this week. “And I’m like, ‘This can’t be happening.’ Fleetwood Mac is three years in. And it’s big. And we’re going into our third album. It was like, ‘Oh no, no, no, no, no, no.’”

The “Dreams” singer-songwriter revealed that she got pregnant while being romantically linked to Eagles frontman Don Henley, following her breakup with Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

Nicks told the outlet that, had she had given birth, it would have “destroyed” the band.

“…Having a child with Don Henley would not have gone over big in Fleetwood Mac, with Lindsey and me — we had been broken up for two or three years. It would’ve been a nightmare scenario for me to live through,” she said, explaining that she would’ve have taken an extended absence from the group.

At the time, Fleetwood Mac was coming off a Grammy win for Album of the Year, four back-to-back hit singles and the mega success off of 1977’s “Rumours.”

The two-time Rock & Roll of Fame inductee said she has the “courage” to use her star power to discuss the importance of women’s rights with the release of her new song “The Lighthouse,” inspired by the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
