St. Louis community mourns 16-year-old boy killed in shooting

ST. LOUIS - A south St. Louis community is in mourning and demanding change after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in their neighborhood.

Police identified the teen as Jamad Edwards of south St Louis. He was found just after 2 a.m. in the middle of Minnesota Avenue near Magnolia in the Tower Grove East neighborhood.

“That's really sad to hear. I hate to hear of anyone hurt by gun violence and we have a lot of it. I hear guns every night,” said Mark Bozis, a resident.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police (SLMPD) said Edwards sustained a gunshot wound and later died at the hospital.

“Our hearts are with his family and loved ones and his friends. This is a horrible act of gun violence in our city and we are right in the middle of our homicide investigation and detectives are doing everything in their power to get Justice for Jamad and his family and make sure whoever is responsible for what happened is held accountable,” said Mitch McCoy, director of Public Affairs and Information for SLMPD.

The deadly shooting happened in an area many neighbors describe as usually quiet. Bozis walks this block every single morning.

“(It) could have been anyone. I don't walk at night just because of that; it's safer. I feel sorry for anyone affected by any gun violence, period,” Bozis said.

Police have not released any suspect information or a possible motive, but anyone with information is urged to contact St. Louis Police.
