Second man charged in deadly gas station shooting

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A second man has been charged in connection with a deadly gas station shooting over the summer in the Norwood Court municipality.

The shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, at the Circle K gas station located on Lucas and Hunt Road, just north of Interstate 70, across from Memorial Park Cemetery.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department’s probable cause statement, Deshawn Johnson arranged a meeting between Unice Hobby IV and Dennis Cooperwood Jr. for the purposes of a drug deal.

Johnson negotiated the terms of the sale. However, during the sale, Hobby shot Cooperwood several times. Cooperwood later died at the hospital. He was 20.

Hobby was arrested later in the month in another county and remains in custody. Johnson was served with an arrest warrant on Oct. 17.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Johnson with second-degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance. Johnson remains jailed on a $300,000 cash-only bond. He’s due in court for a bond reduction hearing on Oct. 25.
