‘Proactive vehicle check’ in Southern California leads to seizure of illegal firearm, stolen cars

Deputies in San Bernardino County arrested a convicted felon after a “proactive traffic stop” turned up a firearm and a search warrant at his home led to the discovery of two stolen cars.

A news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department states that a deputy contacted a man, Carlos Torres, during a proactive vehicle check near Mount Vernon Avenue and Barton Road in the city of Grand Terrace shortly before 11:45 p.m. on Nov. 25.

The deputy conducted a records check of Torres, which revealed that he was on Post Release Community Supervision and a convicted felon.

“During a search of his person, Torres possessed a non-serialized loaded firearm,” SBSD said.

He was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of ammunition and carrying a loaded firearm.

Two days later, detectives and deputies assigned to the Multiple Enforcement Team served a search warrant at Torres’ San Bernardino residence, which led to the discovery of two stolen vehicles.

Torres, 31, was then charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is encouraged to contact SBSD’s Central Station by calling 909-387-3545.
