Patriots release veteran linebacker to make room for Yannick Ngakoue

The Patriots released veteran linebacker Raekwon McMillan from the 53-man roster to make room for veteran pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue, who was claimed off waivers from the Ravens on Friday.

McMillan, 27, started four of nine games this season and notched 45 tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. He first joined the Patriots in 2021 but missed that season with a torn ACL. He missed the entire 2023 season with a torn Achilles.

The release leaves the Patriots with linebackers Christian Elliss, Curtis Jacobs, Sione Takitaki and Jahlani Tavai on the 53-man roster and Joe Giles-Harris and Monty Rice on the practice squad. Elliss was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Bears with an abdomen injury.

The Patriots might have to elevate Giles-Harris or Rice from the practice squad Saturday to fill in for Elliss and McMillan. Starting linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley is out for the season on injured reserve.

If the Patriots intend to add McMillan to their practice squad, he’ll need to clear waivers first.
