AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A 44-year-old man was convicted on two counts of murder in connection with an Elgin double murder that happened in April 2022, according to the Travis County District Attorney's Office.

Abel Bermudez-Ornelas was convicted by a Travis County jury Monday with those two counts of murder, the DA's office said in a news release. This means he will have to serve 60 years for each count of murder, which will be served concurrently in prison.

“Our office is grateful to our dedicated staff and law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable and seek justice for both of the victims' families,” Travis County District Attorney José Garza said in the release. “We hope this verdict continues to help the families with their healing process.”

On April 9, 2022, two men were found shot inside a vehicle on the side of the road in Elgin, according to court records. Those two men were identified as 44-year-old Raul Molina Hernandez and 31-year-old Leonel Ayala Gamino.

Bermudez-Ornelas was arrested on April 16, 2022, and was charged with capital murder of multiple persons, the DA's office said. Then, on July 21, 2022, he was indicted on those two charges, as well as two counts of murder.

The DA's office then proceeded with the trial on Jan. 13 on the two counts of first-degree murder, the release said.
