Local leaders call for protections against rent rigging

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera and Chief Deputy City Attorney Heather Ferbert held a news conference Wednesday morning to announce framework for an issue plaguing San Diegans -- price gouging in the housing market.
Elo-Rivera will propose what's referred to as Item 5 to the City Council's Rules Committee. This addresses the use of AI-driven price-fixing software that's used across San Diego to suggest the highest rental pricing a home can yield.
The Department of Justice, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and several Attorneys General across the country have alleged this kind of software is a modern-day price-fixing service that inflates rent prices, harming millions of Americans.
Elo-Rivera proposes to protect San Diegans from price gouging by banning the sale and use of software that facilitates price fixing. The software is used to determine how housing market prices or other factors that impact the cost of housing are set.
In doing so, Elo-Rivera asserts that San Diegans will be protected from collusion in the housing market.
