Driver in Kearny Mesa crashes into light pole at high rate of speed

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Two people were injured Wednesday after a driver crash into a light pole in Kearny Mesa, authorities said.

According to the San Diego Police Department, a 21-year-old man was driving a 2016 Kia Optima eastbound in the 8000 block of Dagget Street around 3:20 a.m. The driver was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed.

Police said the man did not realize the road ended and crashed into the base of a cement light pole on the east side of 4500 Mercury St. There were two passengers in the vehicle at the time of the traffic accident.

One passenger sustained a fractured jaw, while another, who was unbelted, sustained serious internal injuries. Police said they were both transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver was not reported to be injured.
