I-70 eastbound closed at Vail Pass: No anticipated time of opening

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Department of Transportation reported that eastbound Interstate 70 was closed near Vail on Wednesday night due to a crash.

The commercial vehicle crash was reported at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday as a snowstorm pushed into the mountains overnight. It's expected to slide into the foothills and urban corridor after midnight and will impact the morning commute, which is why Thursday is Pinpoint Weather Alert Day.

The crash was specifically closing the eastbound roadway at milepost 180, which is four miles east of Vail and Exit 176. A look at CDOT roadway cameras showed traffic stopped near the Vail chain station, as well as on the interstate.

CDOT shared a photo of the crashed semitrailer, which appeared to have rolled onto its roof and slid partially off the roadway. Items from inside the trailer were strewn across the entire highway. There was no word on injuries as of 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The roadway also appeared snow-packed and icy, but no cause for the crash was provided.

CDOT had implemented Dotsero truck parking for the night. As of 8:45 p.m., there was no estimated time of reopening.
