High winds, potential power outages prompt school closures

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- For a second day in a row, some school districts in East County will close Thursday due to high winds and potential power outages.

The San Diego County of Education announced the closures of the follow districts for Thursday, Jan. 9:

  • Julian Union Elementary School District
  • Julian Union High School District
  • Mountain Empire Unified School District
  • Warner Unified School District

Sullivan Middle School and Bonsall High School in Bonsall Unified School District have also canceled classes for Thursday.

Red Flag Warning is in effect for San Diego County mountains until 6 p.m. Friday.

"The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," SDCOE said in a news release Wednesday.

Power shutoffs are done as a precaution to help prevent flying debris from coming into contact with power lines and potentially igniting a fire, according to San Diego Gas & Electric.
