How to join waitlist for affordable housing units in North County
Dozens of local families are settling into their new homes at Estrella, the latest affordable housing development in San Marcos, officials with the County of San Diego announced Wednesday.
SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Dozens of local families are settling into their new homes at Estrella, the latest affordable housing development in San Marcos, officials with the County of San Diego announced Wednesday.
The complex provides much-needed housing for families with incomes up to 80% of the area median, offering them a stable, affordable living option in North County.
The development of Estrella, a joint effort between the City of San Marcos, Affirmed Housing Group and other partners, was made possible by a $2.64 million investment from the County of San Diego’s HOME program. These federal funds, allocated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, support affordable housing projects throughout the region.
“The county is all in on increasing affordable housing across our region” said David Estrella, director of the county’s Housing and Community Development Services. “Having an affordable place to live in all parts of the region gives families the opportunity to live near their kids’ school and recreation areas, helping these families and North County thrive.”
Estrella is situated on land that was formerly home to the Mariposa Apartments, an aging 70-unit complex. In partnership with Affirmed Housing, the county oversaw the demolition of the old buildings and redeveloped the site into two new complexes: Alora and Estrella, which together offer a total of 196 affordable units.
Breaking ground in April 2023, the Estrella development has already begun welcoming new residents. For those interested in applying or getting on the waitlist, more information is available by calling 1-800-801-8440, Ext. 7151.
According to the officials with the county, the project continues their commitment to affordable housing, with plans for more homes on the horizon. Since 2017, the county has invested over $314 million into affordable housing initiatives. This investment has helped create nearly 2,500 new homes, with an additional 3,100 units in development.
