Firefighters making 'good progress' on Border 1 Fire near Otay Mountain
Firefighters are making good progress on extinguishing the brush fire that broke out near Otay Mountain on New Year's Day, Cal Fire said in an update on X Thursday.
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Firefighters are making good progress on extinguishing the brush fire that broke out near Otay Mountain on New Year's Day, Cal Fire said in an update on X Thursday.
As of 9:01 a.m. Thursday, the fire is still burning 25 acres but is at least 20% contained, authorities said. Firefighters are working to strengthen control lines and put out any hot spots.
Cal Fire San Diego firefighters are on the scene of a brush fire near the Otay Mountain Truck Trail that broke out just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Dubbed the Border 1 Fire, it was first reported at 15 acres with a moderate rate of spread as of 7:16 p.m., Cal Fire reports. By 11 p.m., the fire had grown to 25 acres and was 5% contained.
The forward rate of spread was stopped shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday night.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said they received a call from a man in Chula Vista who reported he saw a group of vehicles at the top of Otay Mountain. He add the group was reportedly setting off fireworks, which may have started the brush fire.
The department is working to identify any suspects.
