A brush fire in Bonsall quickly grew from one to 15 acres Friday afternoon, prompting evacuations in an area west of Interstate 15.
A North County brush fire quickly grew from one to 15 acres Friday afternoon, prompting immediate evacuations in an area west of Interstate 15.
Firefighters arrived on scene to battle the blaze, in the 3800 block of Lake Garden Drive, east of Gird Road, shortly after 1 p.m., according to Cal Fire San Diego.
Officials described the flames as having “a dangerous rate of spread,” with the potential to burn 100 acres or more. Evacuations were ordered by 1:25 p.m. according to San Diego County’s Alert San Diego website.
Evacuees are being directed to Riverview Church, 4980 Sweetgrass Lane in Bonsall, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
The mandatory evacuation area, north of Pala Road, roughly stretches from parts of San Luis Rey Heights to Pala Mesa.
Other areas are under evacuation warnings, including a zone north of Pala Mesa Drive near the Pala Mesa Golf Course, from Daisy Lane to I-15, along with land off Old Highway 395 east of Via Altamira.
Fire officials said that as they gained control over a fire on San Pasqual Valley Road in Escondido they quickly began to divert resources to the Bonsall blaze, dubbed the Garden Fire.
Forecasters had issued a red flag warning this week to alert the region of fire dangers due to winds and low humidity. It expired late Friday morning, but dry conditions persist that officials said could lead to “extreme behavior” should a fire start.
