Heads up drivers: The California Department of Transportation is notifying the public that power companies may conduct Public Safety Power Shutoff during high wind events to prevent wildfires. During this time, at-risk power lines will be shut off in rural and urban areas.
Power outages can impact traffic signal operations, with signals initially flashing and potentially going dark after extended outages. Caltrans urges motorist to stay vigilant and be prepared during PSPS.
During power outages, traffic signal on State Routes in San Diego and Imperial counties will operate as follows:
• Signals will function normally for approximately three hours after an outage begins.
• They will then switch to “red flash” mode for an additional three to six hours.
• If the outage last more than six hours, signals will enter “blackout mode.”
When traffic signals are in “blackout mode” with no lights showing drivers must treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Stop and proceed only when it is safe. Drivers are advised to refer to the DMV Driver’s Handbook for detailed guidance. California Vehicle Code Section 21800 (d) (1) states: “The Driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection which has official traffic control signals that are inoperative shall stop at the intersection and may proceed with caution when it is safe to do so.”
Caltrans urges motorist to exercise extreme caution and patience during outages. Be vigilant of other driver and their movements.
