(KRON) -- The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) said it is closely monitoring an Amber Alert phone scam that seems to be targeting Hispanic residents.
According to SMCSO, residents should be on the lookout for scammers posing as Amber Alert reps who offer to register their children through the alert system. Deputies said potential victims are asked for personal information and to have the ‘reps’ meet them at their home.
Officials said that isn't how the statewide Amber Alert system works, noting “only law enforcement agencies can activate an Amber Alert and there is no registry.”
Deputies ask residents to not pick-up calls from unknown or “possible scam” numbers.
Anyone who has been contacted by the scammers is urged to call the sheriff’s office at 1-650-363-4911 and file a report.
