During the recent Winter Meetings in Dallas, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman hinted that the team’s catching depth might be in play for potential trades this offseason. On Friday evening, that speculation materialized into action as the Yankees struck a deal with the Cincinnati Reds, acquiring right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson in exchange for catcher Jose Trevino.
A Deal to Address Key Needs
The trade highlights the Yankees’ strategy to bolster their bullpen while maintaining depth behind the plate. Cashman’s confidence in the Yankees’ catching reserves allowed the club to part ways with Trevino, who played a pivotal role in past seasons but found himself as a tradeable asset due to the team’s surplus at the position.
Fernando Cruz, 34, brings a mix of experience and dominance out of the bullpen. Despite a 3-8 record and a 4.86 ERA in 69 appearances (three starts) for the Reds last season, Cruz showcased elite strikeout ability. His 14.72 strikeouts per nine innings led all MLB pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched, and his 37.8% strikeout rate ranked third.
Since debuting in the majors, Cruz has proven to be a reliable strikeout artist, tallying 185 strikeouts as a reliever over the past two seasons — the fifth most in the league. His ability to generate swings and misses, paired with his veteran presence, should provide a valuable boost to the Yankees’ bullpen.
Adding Depth Behind the Plate
Catcher Alex Jackson, who also joins the Yankees as part of the trade, offers additional depth and flexibility at the position. A former top prospect, Jackson has shown flashes of offensive potential and defensive versatility, making him an intriguing option for the Yankees moving forward.
Saying Goodbye to Jose Trevino
Jose Trevino, a fan favorite and Gold Glove-winning catcher, will now don a Reds uniform. Trevino’s steady presence behind the plate and leadership qualities will undoubtedly benefit Cincinnati as they look to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
Looking Ahead
This trade signifies the Yankees’ commitment to addressing their immediate needs while balancing long-term goals. By acquiring Cruz and Jackson, the team enhances its bullpen and catching options, positioning itself for a competitive 2025 campaign.
As the offseason progresses, Yankees fans can expect more moves from Cashman and his team as they continue to shape the roster for another run at a championship.
