World ID is described as a “digital passport of humanity,” designed to allow individuals to securely prove they are unique human beings. This capability is becoming essential for various digital applications.
Worldcoin introduces World ID as a solution amid the rise of AI
The system’s introduction in Colombia aligns with growing interest in human verification across Latin America. A survey conducted in April 2024 by Cifras y Conceptos for Worldcoin found that 71% of respondents were concerned about the increase in fraud and misinformation due to more sophisticated online bots. Additionally, 63% were worried about the growing difficulty in distinguishing between human-created content and that generated by artificial intelligence.

Among the respondents, 68% agreed on the need for mechanisms to differentiate between bots and humans online. Furthermore, 80% supported the development of new technologies by tech companies to verify human identity on the internet. Interestingly, 70% of participants indicated they had used technologies requiring biometric information.
World ID positions itself as a solution to these concerns, highlighting its privacy and control features. It uses zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) to protect public keys and prevent tracking across applications. The system also implements secure multiparty computation (SMPC) to encrypt iris codes into multiple secret parts, managed by different trusted entities.
Moreover, World ID offers the option to store personal information securely on the user’s device rather than on the orb and allows for the permanent deletion of the iris code for those who wish to de-verify their World ID, providing greater control over personal data.
Worldcoin is launching World ID in Colombia amid legal challenges in other countries
The company has faced legal issues in Spain and Portugal, where its operations have been banned, and ongoing investigations in Argentina and Chile. These legal troubles raise questions about the implementation and security of the system in other countries.
While the introduction of World ID could address concerns about online authenticity and set a standard for privacy and security, it is crucial to consider the legal and trust challenges the company faces in other regions.
The arrival of World ID in Bogotá and Medellín could be a significant step for digital identity protection in Colombia, provided that privacy and regulatory concerns are properly addressed.
