DENVER (KDVR) — A 23-acre fishing easement north of Steamboat Springs is under an emergency closure to help mitigate stream bank erosion along the Elk River.
The Christina State Wildlife Area is located approximately 7 miles north of Steamboat Springs in Routt County, managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. CPW Director Jeff Davis approved an emergency closure of the area on Friday after CPW staff visited the area on Nov. 11.
During the visit, staffers saw "significant" erosion on the stream bank next to a private residence. Staffers investigated and determined that if the erosion continued, the home's structural integrity would be affected. CPW announced Tuesday that it will be taking immediate action to fortify the stream bank and save the home.
The closure will remain in effect until further notice, the agency announced Tuesday, and that includes the public parking area along County Road 129. The area will be used to stage heavy equipment for mitigation efforts.
The bank stabilization and restoration work will likely be completed in spring 2025, which may require a second closure of the wildlife area, CPW reported.
