ST. LOUIS - A widow of a fallen St. Louis firefighter is continuing her annual tradition of handing out free turkeys to community members.
Residents in need can receive a free turkey at the Bellefontaine Recreation Center in Bellefontaine Neighbors from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Darnita Riggins lost her husband, Leonard, in November 2008. He was off-duty helping what appeared to be a stranded motorist, who turned out to be a carjacker that killed Leonard.
The turkey giveaway is an annual tradition that helps Darnita and her family during a difficult month.
“He had a big heart and a big smile to match,” she said. “We loved to go on cruises,” she said.
Since then, Darnita has formed the Innocent Life (S.A.I.L.) Foundation, named after her husband. The organization gives away scholarships, sponsors back-to-school giveaways, and provides community support
“I’m just trying to keep Leonard’s memory alive,” she said.
Giving back helps ease the pain she feels daily.
“It helps me a lot,” Darnita added. “It helps our family and helps our friends.”
