Who is my anonymous Rudy Giuliani troll?
On Sunday night, Nov. 10, I appeared on CNN “Newsroom Primetime” with Jessica Dean to discuss Rudy Giuliani’s refusal to comply with Manhattan Federal Judge Lewis Liman’s order to turn over his assets to the two Georgia poll workers he defamed and continues to defame.
The following day at 2 p.m., I was anonymously harassed and threatened on text by one of the few remaining Kool-Aid-drinking fans of “America’s Mayor”. The threat came from an untraceable burner phone (786-574-8388).
The intimidating message was clear: If I continue speaking to the media about Rudy Giuliani, private investigators “will look into your background” for the “skeletons in your closet.”
Below is the full, unedited text thread exchange between the unknown troll and me. My responses are italicized. To assess the threat level, I’ve shared the text thread with the NYPD and my attorney:
Ken why are you speaking to the media about mayor Rudy Giuliani. You aren’t his friend you’re not involved in his life so what information could you possibly have. Mayor Giuliani is a national hero who has been lied about repeatedly
Don’t text me again. Unless you’re manly — or womanly — enough to identify yourself.
You’re a coward. I’m sure you’ve lived a perfect life. No skeletons in your closet, right Ken?
We are so sick of people going out there and lying and defaming the mayor, thinking they can get away with it without pushback
The truth about you will be coming out if you continue to lie and defame the mayor
Sounds like a threat. I will treat it as such.
It’s not a threat and you know it
If you are allowed to go out and talk about the mayor and his life, private investigators are well within their right to look into your background
Actually, that’s exactly what it is.
Read it as me from you. Another threat from an anonymous troll.
I will make it clear to you now. This isn’t meant to be a threat and it’s not personal. If you continue to lie about the mayor, I have people who are prepared to come out and talk about you and your track record with the mayor. If you dont think there’s people out there who care and love the mayor you are mistaken
You are lying about the mayor and you are attempting to benefit off these lies while defaming his character. It is meant to cause him actual harm.
I will make it clear to you now.
Rudy “lied”, “defamed his character” and “caused actual harm” to himself. Not me. Not the two poll workers in Georgia. There once were countless “people out there who care and love the mayor”. No more. Now it’s just you and a handful of other sycophants who, out of a misplaced sense of loyalty, still call him America’s Mayor. Make that America’s Disgraced Mayor.
I was Giuliani’s campaign press secretary in 1993. He was a great mayor and, following his Churchillian performance after Sept. 11, deserved the moniker “America’s Mayor” and being knighted by Queen Elizabeth. From the top of the mountain, he’s steadily gone downhill since unwisely signing on as Donald Trump’s lawyer.
Since publishing a New York Times op-ed on Oct. 8, 2019, headlined “What Happened to Giuliani?,” I’ve regularly written and spoken about his terrible transformation.
That op-ed led to many more columns, print-and-broadcast interviews and a four-part, Emmy-nominated, CNN documentary-series, “Giuliani: What Happened to America’s Mayor?” I served as consulting producer.
After five years of researching and reporting on Giuliani, I’m still in search of the elusive answer to the question of what happened to him.
It could be unlimited greed, direct access to Trump, indirect power and relevance.
An unquenchable thirst for Scotch has undoubtedly contributed to his awful personality change and self-inflicted reputational wounds. Only he and his groupies know for sure.
I do know that we haven’t seen Giuliani hit rock bottom. Even after watching his daughter change her last name; hair dye run down his face; stick his hand down his pants in the Borat movie; sip soup while shaving in an airport food court; butt-dial reporters; record Cameo video messages; and, most reprehensibly, launch a Go Fund Me page to “buy food.” An insult to everyone who can’t afford to eat.
How low can you go, Rudy? We’ll stay tuned.
