When will we know which bowl games CU, CSU will go to?
The University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes and Colorado State University Rams are both bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016.
DENVER (KDVR) — The University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes and Colorado State University Rams are both bowl-eligible this season after the teams finished 9-3 and 8-4 respectively.
This is the first year the Centennial State has had more than one team represent it in the college football post-season since 2016, although both CU and CSU have had more recent appearances. The Air Force Academy has also made it to a bowl game multiple times since 2016 but did not qualify this year.
Bowl game selections will be revealed after Sunday, Dec. 8. This is when the College Football Playoff committee reveals the teams for the first-ever 12-team playoff.
Which bowl game could CU end up in?
While CU is currently in the Big 12, it is part of the Pac-12 legacy pool as far as bowl game selection goes.
There are six bowl games open to current and legacy Pac-12 teams, according to the Big 12:
- LA Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 18
- Las Vegas Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27
- Holiday Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27
- Alamo Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 28
- Independence Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 28
- Sun Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 31
There is a longstanding process for deciding which teams go to which bowl. For example, the Art of Sport LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk pairs the No. 1 selected Mountain West team against the No. 5 selected former or current Pac-12 team.
The CU Buffs have been selected to play in the Alamo Bowl the last two times they were bowl-eligible.
Which bowl game could CSU end up in?
While the Big 12 has provided a list of bowl games that CU could end up selected for, the Mountain West Conference has not done the same.
However, there are some long-standing agreements that determine which conferences play in which bowl games.
In 2023, Mountain West teams were selected to play in seven bowl games:
- LA Bowl - Wednesday, Dec. 18
- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl - Monday, Dec. 23
- Hawai'i Bowl - Tuesday, Dec. 24
- Rate Bowl - Thursday, Dec. 26
- Armed Forces Bowl - Friday, Dec. 27
- New Mexico Bowl - Saturday, Dec. 28
- Arizona Bowl - Saturday, Dec. 28
It is not guaranteed that Mountain West teams will play in all of the same bowl games they did in 2023.
San Jose State has already been selected to play in the Hawai'i Bowl against the University of South Florida so that one is already off the table for 2024.
