What is open and closed on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is an annual U.S. federal holiday observed Nov. 11 to honor those who have served in our nation's armed forces.

While many businesses remain open on Veterans Day – and treat veterans and service members with deals and freebies – some things will be interrupted.

United States Postal Service

USPS offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. There will be no regular mail delivery, caller service or P.O. Box service. Operations will go back to normal on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Amazon, FedEx, UPS

Private shippers like Amazon, FedEx, UPS and DHL will still be delivering packages on Monday. Offices may have limited hours, however.

Banks

Federal banks and their branches will be closed for the federal holiday. Bank ATMs and digital banking features are typically still in service. Private banks like Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America are also closed.

Government offices

Federal offices are closed in observance of federal holidays, including Veterans Day. City and county offices are also typically closed on federal holidays.

Schools

Most school districts close classrooms on Veterans Day, but it's not a requirement. It's best to check with your local school district to confirm whether classes are in session or not.

Trash service

Check with your trash service provider. In some areas, trash pickup continues on the holiday, while in other locations trash day is postponed in observance of Veterans Day.

Retailers

Major grocery stores and big-box retailers are likely open on Veterans Day, and some may be offering sales. Walmart, Target and Costco all plan to maintain normal operating hours.

National parks

Not only are national parks open on Veterans Day, they're actually free to visit on the holiday. The National Park Service waives entrance fees on Nov. 11.

For active duty military members and veterans, national parks are free to visit anytime. Proof of service will get them an annual or lifetime pass.
