DENVER (KDVR) — Speed limit signs aren't posted on every street in Denver; however, the city still expects drivers to stick to one speed when there are no signs.
There are state speed limits, which apply to Colorado roads and highways. Meanwhile, many cities have their own speed limits, some of which are posted and some aren't.
Until last year, the city of Denver's default speed limit was 25 mph. However, Denver passed an ordinance in 2021 as part of Denver’s “Vision Zero” program, which was designed to address street safety and reduce deaths and injuries from crashes to zero by 2030.
Signs were eventually posted reflecting the new default speed limit: 20 mph.

The city of Denver expects drivers to stay at 20 mph when no speed limit signs are posted, which the city said is usually on residential roads that don't have lines.
According to the city of Denver's Code of Ordinances, Section 54-157, when there are unposted speed limits without any hazards, drivers should be traveling 15 mph in alleys and park roads and 20 mph on streets and highways.
While some signs reflect the change, the city said this project will take years. The city plans on updating thousands of signs inside and on the borders of the city limits.
Other areas around the state also have default speed limits. Boulder's default speed limit is also 20 mph as part of the city's Vision Zero program.
