SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Firefighters are responding to a brush fire burning southwest of the San Diego State University campus Thursday afternoon. Authorities have confirmed there is no threat to the campus.
As of 2:42 p.m., the fire was estimated at 37 acres.
The fire was reported in the area of Fairmount Avenue and Montezuma Road around 1:45 p.m. Aldine Drive was also impacted. According to authorities, the fire is burning in the canyon behind Lucille Drive in Talmadge and Alvarado Estates.
Mandatory evacuations are issued south of Alvarado Canyon Road, west of Hewlett Drive, north of Monroe Avenue and east of Montezuma Road. Hardy Elementary is being evacuated to Viejas Arena at SDSU. Parents can use Canyon Crest and being told to avoid College Avenue to access the arena, according to authorities.
