Warner Bros. is changing its strategy and focusing on signature franchises like Mortal Kombat, Batman, Game of Thrones, and Hogwarts Legacy. This decision follows a challenging past year for the company.
According to the report of Insidergaming, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. announced in the earning call held on November 7th that the gaming department will prioritize the profitable titles to stabilize the game business of the company. He said that it has been “substantially underperforming its potential.”
The company has faced prominent losses because of MultiVersus and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Both these titles cost the studios more than $300 million.
Based on this Zaslav said, “I think we’re through some of the worst — and it hasn’t been pretty — on the gaming business.” Therefore, focusing on the successful titles seems like a more sustainable business strategy for the future.
Warner Bros. will avoid releasing multiple different titles
“We’re going to go away from trying to launch 10, 12, 15, 20 different games.” David Zaslav, Warner Bros. CEO
As Zaslav mentioned, the company will avoid releasing back-to-back new titles while only concentrating on the specific ones like the sequel of Hogwarts Legacy which is currently under development.
The second title the main focus of the company is Mortal Kombat. The game will bring in more characters. The latest one will be the launch of Ghostface scheduled on November 26th.
Although there has been silence on the Batman front since the release of Suicide Squad, another Batman game is reportedly in the works under Rocksteady.
As for Game of Thrones, there is not much information about what the company has in plan for this title. However, it remains to be revealed in the future. Zaslav added, “We are focusing our development efforts on those core franchises, with proven studios to improve our success ratio.”
