ST. LOUIS - A 94-year-old Army veteran from St. Louis was honored Friday with a special home improvement project.
It's all part of an effort from The Home Depot Foundation and Rebuilding Together St. Louis to upgrade the homes of nine local veterans.
Saws were spinning and workers were buzzing outside Friday morning to assist veteran Norman Davis.
"Very, very fortunate for me, because I couldn't do it myself," said Davis.
Davis watched as crews from The Home Depot Foundation and Rebuilding Together St. Louis teamed up to upgrade his home.
"This is our passion," said volunteer Anthony Gartner. "This is what we truly love to do. This is what we enjoy to do. Helping somebody that has helped us get to where we need to be, allowing us to do what we're going to be doing Tuesday, being able to vote and have a democracy. They all played a big part in this."
The volunteers repaired the inside and outside of Davis' home, including weatherization and yard landscaping. They say these updates will allow him to live more safely in a place he's called home for more than 50 years.
It will also make it easier for him to maneuver his mobility scooter.
"I love these volunteer projects," said volunteer Blake Randall. "Just being able to do something for a veteran, it just makes you feel good. ... They gave their life for us. The least I could do is come out here and give a couple hours out of my day and do whatever I can for them."
Volunteers also surprised Norman with a Home Depot gift card and signed a picture to thank him for his service.
"Before I was a little bit destitute. I said, 'Man, I couldn't move.' Nothing. And they came by and made it look easy. So I was very grateful to them," said Davis. "These people showed up and did a wonderful, wonderful job. Better than words can express."
