Unity House opens crisis support residence

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A mental health crisis can happen to anyone at any time. Some do not have a place to turn to for support. A local non-profit is hoping to change that.
Unity House in Troy has turned its original ministry site into a crisis support residence. It allows people to receive mental health treatment from trained professionals in a home-like environment.
They said it will provide an alternative to hospitalization to give people time and space to find a path forward.
"Hospitals stabilize people, but residential programs allow for their treatment to occur in the community in the natural setting where we would all like to be as we're recovering, and this crisis center is going to provide that link between the two," Unity House Dir. of Transitional Housing and Support Services Margaret Arias said.
Patients can stay for up to four weeks. There is also a space for them to connect with family, friends and other outside support.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, free and confidential help is available 24/7 by calling 988 or texting 741741.
