In a surprise ceremony, a trail at Luelf Pond County Preserve was named after a longtime resident devoted to championing the outdoors and supporting the Ramona community.
The County Parks and Ramona Trails Association dedicated the trail to John Degenfelder, who founded the association with his late wife in the 1980s.
Degenfelder, who is now in his mid 90s, has a long history of public service. He chaired the Ramona Community Planning Group, helped the “Welcome to Ramona” sign become a reality and worked with former County Supervisor Dianne Jacob on the Santa Maria Creek Staging Area.
The Degenfelder Trail was formerly the Luelf Pond Trail. It is open to hikers, cyclists and equestrians with parking at Holly Oaks County Park.
