These Colorado roads have the fastest speed limits in the state

DENVER (KDVR) — Speed limits vary throughout the country, with some roadways legally allowing 75 to 80 mph.

For most of Colorado, there are set speeds. The Colorado General Assembly said the set speed limits in the state range from 20 mph on winding mountain roads to 65 mph on four-lane highways. But some speed limits around the state are higher.

Highest speed limits in Colorado

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, three interstates allow travelers to drive 75 mph -- the highest speed limit in the state.

Interstate 25, Interstate 70 and Interstate 76 all have portions that allow 75 mph. That said, they're only at specific mile points, so drivers need to pay attention.

Here are the mile points that allow 75 mph, according to CDOT:

I-25

  • Mile markers 15.9 (north of Trinidad) to 94.5 (south of Pueblo)
  • Mile markers 101.9 (north of Pueblo) to 1334.7 (south of Colorado Springs)
  • Mile markers 151.9 (north of Colorado Springs) to 180.4 (south of Castle Rock)
  • Mile markers 187.6 (south of Castle Pines) to 192.6 (south of Lone Tree)
  • Mile markers (northern Westminster) 225.6 to 298.9 (Wyoming border)

I-70

  • Mile markers 0 (Utah border) to 42.2 (Palisade)
  • Mile markers 58.6 (northeast of Palisade) to 108.1 (East of New Castle)
  • Mile markers 131.4 (east of Dotsero) to 167.3 (east of Avon)
  • Mile markers 286 (northeast of Aurora) to 358.7 (west of Limon)
  • Mile markers 364 (east of Limon) to 449.6 (Kansas border)

I-76

  • Mile markers 13.4 (north of Commerce City) to 184.135 (Nebraska border)

According to CDOT's highway data explorer, there are a few other areas that reach up to 70-75 mph. While this is the fastest drivers can legally drive on a Colorado state road, other states have even faster speed limits.

In Montana, the department of transportation said cars and light trucks can drive 80 mph on interstates. Meanwhile, in Texas, there's a maximum speed limit of 80 mph in some counties. Many other areas allow more than the highest speed in Colorado, but within state lines, there are only a few spots in the Centennial State that allow up to 75 mph.
