The new ‘Purple Rain’ musical has been pushed back to the fall of 2025

The world premiere of the new musical based on Prince’s breakthrough film and album “Purple Rain” has been pushed back to the fall of 2025 to “allow for more time for creative development.”

The musical will now run Oct. 16 through Nov. 16, 2025, at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. It had initially been announced for April 10 through May 11. It’s slated to hit Broadway after its local run.

Single tickets have yet to go on sale. Season subscribers have been contacted with further details. “We will do everything we can to accommodate reseating requests throughout the process,” said Dale B. Stark, director of marketing and communications for Hennepin Arts.

Robert “Bobby Z.” Rivkin, drummer of the Revolution, and New Power Generation keyboardist and onetime musical director Morris Hayes are advising producers on the production, which features a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize-finalist and MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (“Appropriate”), based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.

Considered semi-autobiographical and shot at First Avenue and in and around Minneapolis, “Purple Rain” the film grossed $70.3 million worldwide against its $7.2 million budget and won an Oscar for best original song score. In 2019, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

The production will also be holding open casting call auditions in Minneapolis for all roles. Dates and information will be announced in the coming months and will also be available at purplerainbroadway.com.
