LOS ANGELES (KTLA) - A 19-year-old faces a felony charge of reckless driving after authorities said the motorist sped past a deputy going 126 miles per hour on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

The arrest happened on Sunday when, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the deputy was monitoring traffic on PCH near Decker Road. A photo shared on social media shows the deputy clocked the driver of a blue Lexus going 126 miles per hour in the middle of the day.

The 19-year-old was arrested, and the car was immediately impounded, authorities said.

“We all know the devastation speeding can cause, please #SlowDown, let’s cruise safely into 2025,” LASD’s Lost Hills Station posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Local and state officials have increased patrols and added traffic cameras, among other measures, to crack down on speeding along PCH in Malibu.

In October 2023, four Pepperdine University students died when authorities said a speeding driver lost control, sideswiped parked cars and crashed into them near the Malibu Pier.

Over 60 people have died in fatal crashes in the area since 2010, officials said.
