ST. LOUIS - A seven percent pay raise is on the way to St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers in an effort to help with staffing shortages.
The negotiations were voted on and approved by the St. Louis Police Officers' Association (SLPOA). St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones says raising pay has proven to be effective when it comes to boosting recruitment.
Under the new agreement, the city will trim the years of service matrix from a maximum of 30 years down to 20 years, meaning more substantial pay increases for officers.
The current pay for officers is $53,196 upon graduation from the Police Academy. The new salary will rise to $56,920.
The department also agreed to cut the number of commissioned personnel by 124 from 1,124 to 1,100 officers. The bargaining agreement will be sent to the Civil Service Commission for approval before being sent to the Board of Alederman and the Board of Estimate Apportionment.
