St. Louis School Districts enrollment plummets since pandemic

ST. LOUIS - New state data shows that enrollment at St. Louis area schools has plummetted in recent years.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, school districts in the St. Louis area have lost nearly 11,000 students since the start of the pandemic.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's 2024-25 data shows that overall, enrollment across the St. Louis region is down more than 4%.

Jennings, Normandy, Hancock Place, and St. Louis Public Schools have been hit the hardest since the pandemic, losing more than one in every 10 of their students. Popular school districts in the area like Clayton, Fort Zumwalt, Parkway, Rockwood, and Webster Groves have also experienced steep declines.

Since the fall of 2019, St. Louis County school districts have lost more than 6,000 students; St. Louis City has lost 3,000 students; St. Charles County has lost more than 870 students; and Jefferson County's largest school district, Fox, has 1,000 students.

A school consulting firm says dropping enrollment usually leads to less funding, fewer staff, and programs, which can cause even more families to leave.
