ST. LOUIS -- Sam Fox, a prominent local business leader, philanthropist, and former U.S. ambassador to Belgium, died on Monday at the age of 95. His decades of civic engagement and support for Washington University left a mark on the community he called home.
A lifelong supporter of Washington University, Fox was instrumental in the university's development, serving on its Board of Trustees and leading a $1.5 billion fundraising campaign. The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts stands as a testament to his contributions to higher education.
Born in Desloge, Missouri, Fox graduated from WashU's Olin Business School in 1951 and went on to build a successful career in the chemical industry. Together with his wife Marilyn, who passed away earlier this year, he established the Fox Family Foundation, which has supported hundreds of organizations addressing basic human needs.
Fox's philanthropic legacy extends beyond his university connections. He and Marilyn received the Jane and Whitney Harris Saint Louis Community Service Award in 2004, recognizing their extensive charitable work.
