St. Louis Lambert Airport keeps runway open despite winter weather
St. Louis Lambert International Airport is operating one runway amidst severe winter weather conditions, with crews working 12-hour shifts to clear snow and ice and anticipating regular operations to resume Tuesday.
St. Louis Lambert International Airport kept one runway operational this morning despite severe winter weather conditions, with officials hoping to expand operations by afternoon. The airport currently faces 35 delays and 162 cancellations.
Airport Director Hamm-Niebruegge reported that crews have been working 12-hour shifts for the past two and a half days to manage the combination of snow and ice. Essential operations staff were housed in nearby hotels.
To manage snow accumulation, contractors with specialized equipment are melting large snow mounds and hauling snow off-site to clear pathways. Administrative offices remained closed, with non-essential employees working remotely.
The winter storm's widespread impact affected incoming flights from many cities overnight. Officials anticipate more flights to come in this evening, with expectations for regular operations to resume Tuesday, weather permitting.
