SO Honored: U.S. Navy warships are open to the public this weekend

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Members of the public are invited to experience what it's like onboard a U.S. Navy ship this weekend to kick off San Diego Fleet Week.

Different types of military vessels will open their doors this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Navy's "Meet the Fleet at 32nd Street" event. The event will be held on Naval Base San Diego, Pier 13.

Vessels available to tour include the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, Navy destroyers Pinckney and USS Higbee, and littoral combat ship USS Montgomery.

Naval Base San Diego's Harbor Patrol Unit will also put on a live demonstration of blank round firing and a simulation of critical operations. The demonstrations are scheduled for 9:45 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:15 and 2:30 p.m.

The experience also includes military working dog demonstrations at 9:15, 10:30, and 11:45 a.m. as well as 2 p.m. The Navy dog team and decoy will showcase the skills and teamwork between four-legged heroes and their handlers, and their integral role in military operations.

"Meet the Fleet" is free and open to the public. IDs are required to access the piers for ship tours, but IDs are not required to park and enter the event area. All visitors at least 18 and older must show a valid U.S. federal or state-issued ID or passport to go on the ship tours.

There are some restrictions. Ships are not ADA compliant and no pets are allowed onboard. For a list of prohibited items, visit the event webpage.

The event will also include Navy band performances, rides and inflatables for the kids and food and beverage vendors.

All guests must access the base through Gate 9 located at 8th Street and Harbor Drive in National City.
