Six tents go up in flames at St. Paul homeless encampment

A fire at a St. Paul homeless encampment engulfed six tents Wednesday morning, according to the fire department.

No one was in the tents at the time and no injuries were reported, said St. Paul Deputy Fire Jamie Smith.

The fire department was called about 6:45 a.m. to the encampment in the area of the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, below the intersections of U.S. 52 and Interstate 94. Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished the blaze, Smith said. Nearby railroad tracks weren’t affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“Materials in tents are extremely flammable,” Smith said. The fire department, which is involved in education at encampments, recommends people use safe heating equipment and keep it clear of items that can easily start on fire.
