SF Giants’ Matt Chapman named finalist for Silver Slugger

A day after winning his fifth Gold Glove Award, Matt Chapman was named a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award at third base.

Chapman, who has never won the Silver Slugger, finished his first of many seasons in San Francisco with a .247 batting average, 27 homers, 78 RBIs and a .790 OPS, his highest mark in a full season since 2019 (.848). Chapman’s 15 steals were also a career-high, eclipsing the 11 total steals he recorded in the first seven years of his career.

The last Giant to win the Silver Slugger Award was Buster Posey in 2021, one of five times he’d take home the hardware before becoming the team’s president of baseball operations. The last Giant to win both the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the same season was Brandon Crawford in 2015. The other Giants to achieve the feat were Barry Bonds (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997), Matt Williams (1993, 1994) and Will Clark (1991).

Along with Chapman, the Phillies’ Alec Bohm and the Padres’ Manny Machado were also named finalists. Of the three finalists, Machado stands as the favorite after finishing the year with a .280 batting average, 29 home runs, 105 RBIs and a .797 OPS. By OPS+, which accounts for park factors, Chapman (125) has a slight edge over Machado (120).

Bohm, 28, had a .280 batting average, 15 homers, 97 RBIs and a .779 OPS for the Phillies.
