ST. LOUIS - Starting Tuesday, visitors to the St. Louis Zoo will notice an enhanced security measure at both entrances. The Zoo is rolling out the EVOLV system, a high-tech solution designed to detect concealed weapons quickly and efficiently.

This new system is in a pilot phase, meaning Zoo security will be closely monitoring its effectiveness and making adjustments as needed. Located at the North Entrance (also known as The Living World) and the South Entrance, the EVOLV system allows guests to walk through without needing to empty their bags or remove personal items, making the screening process faster.

Zoo officials emphasize that this is part of a broader initiative to make sure all visitors are safe. The Zoo’s security team, staffed 24/7 by personnel with backgrounds in law enforcement, is also certified by the State of Missouri and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Visitors of all ages shared positive reactions to the new security feature. “I feel like it's a good idea because some people try to bring weapons in, and we don't know what they could do with them," Carter Swink said. "They could hurt animals or other people.”

Emma Thomur weighed in, saying, "I think it is a great implementation for the Zoo to add for safety and security. It just gives everybody peace of mind for safety reasons.” Kristin Sotir added, “I think it’s a great addition for people’s safety.”

In addition to the EVOLV system, visitors may see “Speedy,” the Zoo's explosives and weapons detection dog, patrolling the grounds. Speedy has been a key part of the Zoo’s security measures for the past two years, adding yet another layer of protection.
