Search suspended for kayaker who went missing near Mission Bay

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The search for a man who went missing while kayaking near Mission Bay has been suspended, according to an update from the U.S. Coast Guard Monday morning.

The Coast Guard stated in a news release that crews suspended their search around 5:30 p.m. Sunday after surveilling a nearly 460-square-mile area over 52 hours without success.

The search for the missing man began Friday afternoon after San Diego lifeguards found an overturned kayak about 500 yards west of the Mission Bay entrance channel, which separates the neighborhoods of Mission Beach and Ocean Beach.

According to authorities, the kayak appeared new without signs of use but was broken in half.

An investigation later revealed that the kayak belonged to a man who left Mission Bay around 11:45 a.m. Friday.

The last ping from the man's phone was detected around 1:48 p.m. that afternoon, south of the Mission Bay entrance, authorities said.

After considering environmental factors, the probability of survival and the absence of signs of the missing kayaker, the search was suspended in a mutual decision among local agency partners.

Numerous resources were used in an attempt to locate the missing kayaker, including helicopters and Coast Guard vessels such as a 45-foot response boat-medium and the cutter Sea Otter. The Coast Guard was assisted by city lifeguards and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact Coast Guard Joint Harbor Operation Center watchstanders at (619) 278-7013.
