Scituate, Jonny Donovan pass Super Bowl test against Duxbury

“I’m just on top of the world right now. It still hasn’t really all set in, but it’s just awesome. All the hard work finally paid off, and we got the job done.” Scituate QB Jonny Donovan

FOXBORO — It’s always nice to save the best performance for last.

Jonny Donovan may have just taken over as the starting quarterback for Scituate this season, but he is already rewriting the history books.

The junior finished 18-of-24 for 249 yards and four touchdown passes, as the No. 2 Sailors completed a perfect season by capturing their latest Div. 4 Super Bowl title with a fantastic 29-13 victory over top-ranked Duxbury at Gillette Stadium.

“It was a personal battle,” said Scituate senior captain Wyllys Ames. “We wanted revenge, and we made it happen. We came out flying. It means so much for these seniors. We’ve been working for this for seven to ten years, all of us. A win like that to cap off the undefeated season is amazing.”

It was the third Div. 4 final matchup in four seasons for the Patriot League schools, and a rematch of last year’s championship (with Duxbury winning 62-33). The Sailors (13-0) were looking to erase the memories of last year, and wasted no time in doing so as Donovan connected with senior wideout Lawson Foley for an eight-yard touchdown strike on their opening possession to seize an 8-0 lead.

Just moments later, Scituate extended its advantage as Donovan dumped a pass off to Willy Robinson, who scampered free for a 78-yard touchdown reception to make it a 15-0 game.

With the Sailors leading 22-0 with 29 seconds remaining in the first half, Donovan dropped back and fired a pass to the end zone for Roman Glowac. The senior tight end was left uncovered, hauling in a 15-yard touchdown strike as Scituate took a stunning 29-0 advantage into intermission.

Donovan’s fourth score matched the most passing touchdowns thrown in a half during an MIAA Super Bowl. It was also his 31st of the campaign, shattering the Scituate single-season program record for touchdown passes.

“I’m just on top of the world right now,” said Donovan. “It still hasn’t really all set in, but it’s just awesome. All the hard work finally paid off, and we got the job done.”

In addition to Donovan’s heroics, Robinson had eight catches for 122 yards to pace Scituate.

Jack Rees propelled Duxbury (10-2), finishing with 65 yards rushing to go with a score. He also added a touchdown in the passing game off a trick play in the fourth quarter, connecting with Jake Falls for a four-yard strike to cut it to a 29-13 contest. Jack Sovik had 12 receptions for 118 yards.

It was the third Super Bowl title for Scituate since 2018.

“The first one was nice,” said Sailors coach Herb Devine. “The second one was nice, and this one is really nice. I’m not going to get into that debate about what meant more. But this one, getting the final chapter written after last year’s game? I mean, let’s be honest, they were better than us last year. To have that opportunity to play that program and that team (is big). You’re not just playing the 2024 team, you’re playing Duxbury. You’re playing a big program that’s well coached. They know what they’re doing and play hard. For us to go 13-0 and beat Duxbury in the state title game? You can’t write a better book, and a final chapter, than that.”
