BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Families across the country are commemorating the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride. Revere road more than 12 miles to warn minutemen of approaching British troops.
The Sons of Liberty then hung two lanterns from a Boston church steeple to signal that British troops were traveling to Lexington, where the next morning, the first shots of the American Revolution started.
To commemorate the anniversary, Saratoga County officials are inviting families to join the Two Lights for Tomorrow initiative. To take part, shine two lights in your window or porch Friday night.
Local historians said you'll be able to see similar commemorations at the Empire State Plaza.
"If you're near the Empire State Plaza, they are going to light the odd number agency buildings in white and the even in blue, so it gives the effect of two lanterns shining on the state plaza," Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts said.
You can post your displays online using the #Saratoga250 for a chance to win 250th merchandise.
