San Diego medical centers welcome first babies of the new year

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — It's a boy!

Kaiser Permanente welcomed its first newborn baby of 2025 in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The infant was born at 12:51 a.m. to a woman receiving labor care at San Diego Medical Center. Her new son weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and is 20 inches long.

Parents Michelle and Meshulam Provost are doing well, Kaiser Permanente officials say, and excited to take on their new role heading into the year.

A spokesperson for Kaiser believed the Provosts' new son might have been the first baby born in the New Year, but he was not: Just minutes before, at 12:29 a.m., a mom receiving care at Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health also gave birth to a new son, Luca.

It is unclear if there is another little one in San Diego who entered the world closer to midnight on Jan. 1 than Luca.

Both baby boys — along with all other infants born on and after Jan. 1, 2025 — marks the start of a new generation of kids, Generation Beta. This generation will span all births up until about 2039.

Gen Beta unseats Generation Alpha as the youngest generation alive, and many of those born into it will likely live until the 22nd century. They will mostly be parented by younger millennials and those in Gen Z.

However, like Gen Alpha, they will likely be defined by living through a time of great uncertainty — from unpredictable technological advances or climate crises.
