In their first ever Major League Soccer game, San Diego FC traveled just over 100 miles up north to Carson to face the reigning MLS Cup Champion LA Galaxy in a brand new California rivalry.

Many San Diego fans traveled up north to watch their club, and they did not disappoint their fans with a 2-0 road win.

The first half saw very little action other than a yellow card against San Diego FC’s Aníbal Godoy. The card gave the Galaxy a chance to make a move before half, but a shot on goal went high, which left the first half scoreless.

The second half saw a misplay by the Galaxy deep near their own goal which led to an easy goal for one of San Diego FC’s designated players Anders Dreyer, the first in San Diego FC history. Hirving Lozana made an incredible touch pass immediately after the misplay, which led to the easy goal in the 52nd minute.

Although the Galaxy had a few chances later in the second half, they were unable to pull through for an equalizer.

A breakaway goal from Dreyer again in the third minute of extra time all but sealed the victory for San Diego, sending the many fans that traveled north home happy.

San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas thought his team did something incredible Sunday. In a postgame interview with Apple TV, Varas gave all the credit to the players with how hard they played.

“We played against a very, very good team,” Varas said in the postgame interview. “To come here, to the MLS Cup Champions’ house, be brave with the ball, be relentless in our press, show a fighting team spirit, we did that. You’re not going to win every game, but you do that, we’ll make the people proud.”

Varas also acknowledged in the interview the thousands of fans that traveled, and said that the team showed the fans that, at their best, they will be a dangerous team.

“In the good and the bad, we have to believe in it.”

Varas said the team will celebrate tonight, but they will not rest long as they prepare for their home opener on Saturday against St. Louis CITY SC, who Varas said will be looking to spoil the party.
